Vegas in the 90’s saw the creation of the Themed Casino
They needed a lot of space for the new resorts. So they bought up old properties. Most places they would have used a company to tear it down
Vegas did it one better. They imploded the old one. They packed the supports with dynamite and collapsed them inward. I loved watching them go kaboom whump. Imagine a hand swatting a building. You would be watching from a mile away. You felt the explosion in the your chest. The building would hold for a moment then it came crashing down. A huge cloud of pulverized concrete would fly up. Then the wind would catch it carrying all the dust away. The trick was always to be upwind of this.
One time I was on the Sahara Hotels parking garage with about 100 more people. They were taking down the 1/2 built El Ranco. We all had fun watching the implosion. Then the wind shifted. This brought the cloud of dust toward us. We all scrambled to get in our cars. The people that didnt reach them looked like great snowmen. The dust piled up on my truck about 4 inches deep. After it all settled we began to unburry our cars. After this I learned to stay in you car watching the implosions
