Hunter Thompson’s book was based on reality. I worked for the guy who was the Manager of the Mint hotel. Name was Mel Weber. He was the pit boss in charger of the dice pit at Lady Luck. Nicest guy I ever worked for in in Vegas. One unique thing was he only had three fingers on each hand. He had to learn how to cut the checks ( drop of 1 to 5 at a time of a stack of 20. Dealing with 4 fingers is tough enough at the start.
He was the manager that threw Hunter Thompson out of the hotel. He arranged a room for them at the Circus Circus hotel. Funny thing once when we had the Crips gang out of Chicago that came to Vegas in a Uhaul he got fed up with them. The gang bangers grabbed the cocktail waitresses breasts. Push other women up against a wall and almost rapped them. They were only saved by security. Mel said enough was enough. He called Circus Circus once again and sent a horrible guest to that Hotel.
Mel was cool. He had the ability to sleep with his eyes open. He would sit box ( the only guy that could sit on the craps table). He would put his arms supporting his head an sleep. When we needed him we would wake him up. He is my favorite Pit Boss ever.
